The cause of all these hikes being the word INFLATION a monetary phenomenon as claimed by Milton Friedman, which the younger generation of the twenty first century were quite unaware of. The Australian inflation rate measured by CPI had risen by 7.3% in the latest reading of September 2022. Australia uses CPI (Consumer Price Index) as the measure of inflation and this as of 2022 is published on quarterly basis by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The last time inflation was this high was around late 1980s. The Reserve Bank of Australia’s objective is to maintain price stability in the Australian Economy and has a mandate of keeping inflation rate between 2-3% on average over the medium term. To maintain this goal, the Reserve Bank uses cash rate to influence the financial conditions in the Australian economy. The cash rate serves as a benchmark rate of interest which determines other interest rates in the Australian economy. This is similar to the federal funds rate which is determined by the US Federal Reserve Board to influence the US economy.
